Mississippi Lottery Corporation Announces Powerball® Changes to Starting Jackpots

JACKSON, MISS. – (March 25, 2020) The Mississippi Lottery Corporation (MLC) and the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) announced changes to the popular Powerball game. Following the next grand prize win, the starting jackpot will reset to $20 million (annuity) and increase by a minimum of $2 million (annuity) each roll.  If tonight’s $150 million jackpot is not won, the jackpot will grow to an estimated $160 million (annuity).

“The board of directors of MUSL conducted a call today to discuss the economic impact the COVID-19 virus is causing the world, including lotteries,” said MLC President Tom Shaheen. “Based on the Powerball Game Rules and MLC Drawing Style Game Rules and Regulations, the starting jackpot amount will change following the next grand prize win.

“Currently, Powerball sales have been decreasing,” he continued. “People are staying home. Retailers have altered hours. Although this is having an effect on sales, we are glad people are taking steps to stay healthy and safe.”

Tonight’s advertised jackpot is a guaranteed $150 million; $114.8 million cash value. If the jackpot is won in tonight’s drawing, the jackpot will reset to a guaranteed $20 million (annuity) for the Saturday, March 28, drawing with minimum jackpot roll increases of $2 million between drawings.

Powerball tickets are $2 per play. Tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings occur on Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET from the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee.

The Multi-State Lottery Association is a non-profit, government benefit, voluntary association that is entirely owned and operated by its member lotteries. Each MUSL member lottery offers one or more multi-jurisdictional lottery games administered with the assistance of MUSL. All profits are retained by the individual lotteries and are used to fund projects or purposes approved by their authorizing legislatures.
